Budget Travel Guide for Students: Explore More, Spend Less
Here are even more practical tips on how to save money while traveling as a student:
1. Plan Ahead and Be Flexible
The earlier you start planning your trip, the better. Look for flight deals well in advance using websites like Skyscanner which is great for comparing prices. However, flexibility is key; if you can adjust your travel dates, you can often find much cheaper flights. Consider flying on weekdays instead of weekends, as fares are usually lower and off peak times, cheaper and less busy!
2. Buy a City Pass
If you’re planning to visit multiple attractions, some cities offer tourist passes that give you discounted or free entry to popular sights, as well as free public transportation. These passes can be a good investment if you’re staying for a few days and want to see the highlights. GetYourGuide is a really good app that offers cheap attraction tickets for many countries.
3. Choose Budget Accommodation
Accommodation can eat up a significant portion of your travel budget, but it doesn’t have to. Consider staying in hostels, which are not only affordable but also a great way to meet fellow travellers if your considering backpacking. Websites like Hostel world and Airbnb offer a variety of budget-friendly options. Also as students we have access to many discount codes including a 10% Discounts for Hotels.com and Expedia. These codes can be found through the Unidays app.
4. Travel During Off-Peak Seasons
Traveling during off-peak seasons can lead to significant savings. Prices for flights and accommodations drop, and popular tourist spots are less crowded. Research the best times to visit your chosen destination to avoid peak tourist seasons and take advantage of lower prices. This is great for students to take advantages of as we have many holidays and between semesters such as the month of January. In January I done a trip to Amsterdam for less than £100 so keep a look out in the New Year if your looking for a quick cheap getaway to avoid the January blues.
5. Eat Like a Local
Dining out can quickly drain your budget. Instead of eating at touristy restaurants, seek out local markets or street food vendors. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also get to experience authentic local cuisine. Cooking some meals in your hostel or Airbnb kitchen is another excellent way to save. If your staying in a hotel UberEATS is always a great easy and cheap way for a meal and is available in many countries!
6. Use Public Transportation
Skip the expensive taxis and opt for public transportation. Buses, trains, and subways are often much cheaper and can give you a better sense of the local culture. If you’re exploring a city, consider walking or renting a bike; it’s a great way to see the sights and stay active! Many countries will have dedicated apps for their main travel options so keep an eye out when in tram stations or buses.
7. Take Advantage of Free Activities
Many cities offer free or low-cost attractions that are perfect for budget-conscious travellers. Research free walking tours, museum days, and local festivals. Parks, markets, and historical landmarks often have no entry fees and can provide a fantastic experience without costing a dime. If you are a student and under the age of 21 most museums let you in for free with proof of ID so always do your research first before jumping to buy tickets!
8. Pack Smart and Light
Packing light saves you from the dreaded extra baggage fees. Many budget airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet charge steep prices for checked luggage, so try to stick to carry-on luggage. Plus, traveling light makes it easier to get around. A bonus to this as well is not having to wait in the airport queues to check in your bags and waiting to collect luggage after your flight.
9. Be Cautious with Currency Exchange
Exchange rates can fluctuate, and airport kiosks often charge high fees. Avoid exchanging money at the airport and withdraw local currency from ATMs for better rates. Additionally, consider using a travel debit or credit card that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees. My recommendation would be using Revolut when abroad, it is quick and easy to transfer money and there is no cost for making an account.
10. Travel with Friends
Traveling with friends can help split costs for accommodations, food, and transportation. Group discounts are often available for attractions and transportation, so the more, the merrier! Plus, sharing experiences with friends can make your trip even more enjoyable.
Final Thoughts
Traveling on a budget doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice adventure or excitement. With these tips, you can explore the world and create lasting memories without overspending. So, start planning your next adventure, pack your bags, and get ready for the experience of a lifetime!
