Exploring Amsterdam in January

Amsterdam is one of the most stunning and energetic cities in Europe. It was the ideal location for a January holiday with my friends. We were able to see everything without going over budget because of the city's appeal, even in spite of the cold weather. This is an overview of my experience, where we stayed, what we did, and some recommendations for saving money while still taking advantage of everything Amsterdam has to offer. If you're thinking about visiting this beautiful city continue reading.

Our decision to stay at the Best Western Hotel was an excellent choice in terms of both cost and comfort. Situated just a short tram ride from the city centre, the hotel offered a warm and comfortable escape. The rooms were modern, clean, and provided with every convenience we required, including free WIFI, a comfortable bed, and breakfast to start the day. While not the most luxurious, it was ideal for a group of friends who wanted to be near to the excitement without breaking the bank. Additionally, the hotel was offering good bargains on booking websites, so we were able to secure a great deal.

Amsterdam is packed with things to do, no matter your interests. Here are a few highlights from our trip:

A visit to Amsterdam would not be complete without taking a relaxing walk along the city's famous canals. We hired bicycles, which is the mode of transportation in Amsterdam, and rode through the beautiful streets. You may see anything from cafes to charming houseboats lining the canals on this enjoyable and cost-free way to see the city.

Amsterdam is home to many well-known museums, such as the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, but there are also a lot of free ones that are well worth seeing. We were fortunate enough to visit the Stedelijk Museum on a day when admission is free. Another must-see is Amsterdam's largest public park, the Vondelpark, which is also completely free!

Despite being one of the city's most visited tourist destinations, a trip to the Anne Frank House is both heart-breaking and educational. The history and experience of seeing where Anne Frank and her family hid during World War II make the reasonably priced admission charge well worth it. To avoid long waits, we advise purchasing tickets in advance.

The Ice bar Amsterdam was an unreal experience. The entire bar is made of ice, including the walls, furniture and even the glasses! We were provided with gloves and thermal coats. A drink was included in the admission price, and we had a great time exploring this cold wonderland. I highly recommend booking tickets and going here for the best experience.

No trip to Amsterdam is complete without a canal cruise, but ours came with a bonus— unlimited alcohol for an hour! We booked a budget-friendly cruise that offered unlimited beer, wine, and soft drinks as we drifted along the city’s famous canals.

Amsterdam is known for being a bit pricey, but with a little planning, it’s possible to visit on a budget. Here are some of my top tips for saving money during your trip:

Book Tickets in Advance- Attractions like the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum can be pricey, but booking tickets online in advance often comes with discounts and saves you time by avoiding long queues. Plus, some museums offer free admission on certain days of the month, so it’s always worth checking beforehand.

Take Advantage of Free Activities- As mentioned earlier, there are plenty of free activities in Amsterdam, including walking along the canals, visiting parks, and exploring different neighbourhoods. We made sure to plan our days around these free activities, and it really helped keep the budget low.

Use Public Transport - Amsterdam’s public transport system is efficient and easy to use. Instead of relying on taxis, you can buy an I amsterdam card, which gives you unlimited access to trams, buses, and metro services. We bought a bundle of tickets for the 5 days which saved us a lot of money.

Conclusion-

Amsterdam in January was the perfect winter getaway with friends. The city’s beauty and charm were in full swing, despite the chilly weather. Staying at the Best Western Hotel was a great way to save money while still being close to all the major attractions. We had an unforgettable time exploring the city, from the Ice bar to scenic canal cruises, and we made the most of our budget by using public transport, eating locally, and seeking out free attractions. If you're planning a trip with friends, Amsterdam is a fantastic destination to explore, especially in January when it is not as crowded and the atmosphere is still amazing. Last tip.. watch out for the locals on bikes!
